A Beach On Mars

via Gizmodo by Jesus Diaz on 8/13/09

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE—High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment—camera has captured one of the most beautiful photographs of Mars to date: An oblique view—at 22 degrees east of straight down—of the Victoria Crater, in the Meridiani Planum region.

According to NASA, this unique angle will give scientist a great opportunity to study the geological layers in this area. It looks like a dried lake to me—of course is not—but that's just my ignorant untrained eye making things up.

How to turn a garage door into a work of art

via dailymail.co.uk on 7/22/09

At first glance, this looks like a very well-to-do neighbourhood. One in which Formula One racing cars, private jets, speedboats and the kind of equipment that any fledgling rock band would be proud of are left lying around in the garage.

In fact, these utterly realistic images are printed on plastic sheets which are stuck on garage doors - the latest craze for home owners who want to not so much keep up with, as totally freak out, the Joneses.

The weather and fire-resistant prints are designed to disguise that boring, flaky, greying metalwork. Held in place by industrial strength Velcro, they are easy to change and virtually indestructible.

The fashion started in Germany and is now being taken up by humorous garage owners over here. At £145, it's certainly quite a lot cheaper than a real sports car, jet fighter, or whatever.

And for the more imaginative customer, creator Thomas Sassenbach (www.styleyourgarage.com) will customise any image on request. Now, has anyone seen the pet crocodile today?

Scenes from the ISS

'Scenes from the ISS' shows the world from an astronaut's eyes

You may have seen the shots of Russia's Sarychev volcano eruption NASA postedearlier this week. Well, the folks over at the Boston Globe's Big Picture went through the archives of other photos taken from the ISS, and have dug up some gems.

Some of our favorites are down below. The first is probably the wildest: what looks like an instrumentation panel or a blueprint is actually a photo of roads and circular fields in Egypt. There are also breathtaking views of volcanoes, islands, rivers and cities. What better view can you get of this planet of ours than from the International Space Station?

Turişti aflaţi în canoe, înconjuraţi de rechini

via Antena3 - Bizar on 6/5/09
